The Marshall Islands issued commemorative dollars with unusual frequency throughout the 1990s, operating a program aimed almost entirely at the collector market rather than domestic circulation. This piece honors the Norse longship — the clinker-built vessel that enabled Scandinavian expansion across the North Atlantic, reaching Iceland by roughly 874 AD and the North American coast five centuries before Columbus.
Worth noting: the RMI had no meaningful numismatic tradition of its own at this date, and pieces like this were produced under contract by foreign mints for direct sale to collectors. Virtually none entered circulation.
