The Marshall Islands issued a prolific series of commemorative dollars throughout the 1990s, many of which — including this Uranus piece — were struck by the Pobjoy Mint in the UK under licensing arrangements with the island nation's government. The coins were legal tender in name but never intended for circulation; the RMI had no domestic coin distribution infrastructure to speak of.
Uranus was the seventh piece in a nine-coin outer planets series. The planet had been discovered by William Herschel in 1781 — who initially mistook it for a comet — making it the first planet identified with a telescope rather than the naked eye.
