| Reverse description | The heraldic arms of the University of the West Indies occupy the central field, displaying a shield charged with an open book above a castle or architectural element, surmounted by a helm with mantling and a pelican as crest, flanked by decorative foliate branches. A scroll beneath the shield bears the university motto ORIENS EX OCCIDENTE LUX. The commemorative legend 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES arcs around the upper and left periphery, while the anniversary dates 1948 - 1998 are inscribed along the lower field. The design is executed in high-relief proof style with polished fields. |
