The University of the West Indies was founded in 1948 as a college of the University of London, achieving independent university status in 1962 — the same year Jamaica gained independence. This issue marks the institution's fiftieth anniversary. UWI's Mona campus in Kingston was built partly on land donated by the colonial government, a political calculation that tied higher education infrastructure directly to the mechanics of decolonization.
