The Republic of the Marshall Islands built an aggressive commemorative coinage program through the 1990s, issuing dozens of themed pieces through the Franklin Mint and similar private minting operations. These were never intended for circulation — the RMI's actual monetary system runs on U.S. dollars — making the legal tender status largely nominal. KM#169 belongs to a lunar-themed series timed to anniversary observances of the Apollo program.
