The Marshall Islands operated no traditional central bank mint infrastructure and contracted virtually all its commemorative coinage to foreign producers throughout the 1990s, during which it issued an extraordinary volume of themed dollars targeting the collector market. This MiG-21MF issue belongs to that decade's aviation series — a program so prolific it drew criticism from numismatic dealers for market saturation.
The MF variant of the MiG-21 entered Soviet service in 1970, exported widely to Warsaw Pact and non-aligned nations alike, and saw combat across four continents.
