The "MAS" series — named for the issuing authority rather than any thematic title — replaced the earlier Ship series beginning in 1999, with this denomination entering circulation in the early 2000s. Singapore's decision to retain paper rather than shift to polymer for this denomination was deliberate; the Monetary Authority had experimented with polymer on lower values and found public acceptance uneven.
P#49 is one of the longer-lived notes in the series, spanning over a decade of issue without significant design revision — a quiet indicator of institutional confidence in the security specification.
