Additional information

Nauru's 1994 gold issues commemorating the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse — the German passenger liner that called at the island during the colonial period — were struck under the authority of the Bank of Nauru, an institution that by the mid-1990s had become deeply entangled in the republic's ill-fated phosphate trust fund collapse. The coin program was itself partly a revenue-generation measure as the island's primary income source began its terminal decline.

The .583 fineness places this squarely in the 14-karat category, less common in Pacific commemorative issues than the .999 gold flooding that market at the time.
