| Reverse description | A naturalistic depiction of a kangaroo seated in a resting posture, its head turned to gaze back over its right shoulder toward a stylised eucalyptus tree silhouetted on the horizon, with additional native scrubland shrubbery in the middle ground. The design is rendered in fine detail with delicate surface texture conveying the animal's fur. The legend 2023 1/2oz 9999 GOLD KANGAROO appears around the design, with the Perth Mint's P mintmark and the designer's initials IJ also present in the field. |

| Additional information |
Perth Mint's annual Kangaroo bullion series has run continuously since 1989, making it one of the longest-uninterrupted gold bullion programs of any sovereign mint. The design changes each year, a deliberate policy that has driven secondary-market collector interest well beyond the melt value of individual issues — an unusual dynamic for a coin whose primary purpose is straightforward gold investment.
The 2023 issue is among the last struck under the Elizabeth II obverse authorization; Charles III portraits began appearing on Perth Mint issues shortly after the Queen's death in September 2022, making late-2023 Elizabeth II strikes a transitional footnote in the series.
