Obverse description The obverse presents a central intaglio portrait vignette of Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President and former Union General, executed in fine line engraving. The gold Treasury seal is positioned to the left of the portrait, flanked by denomination inscriptions and series text set against an intricate guilloche underprint. Letterpress legends across the upper and lower registers identify the note as a Gold Certificate and attest to its legal tender status and gold coin redemption terms.

Reverse description The reverse is printed entirely in green intaglio and centres on a large vignette of the United States Capitol building, with the Washington Monument visible in the left background. The numeral 50 appears in each corner, framed by ornate scrollwork, while fan-shaped guilloche rosettes anchor the left and right borders. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches across the top in bold serif lettering, with FIFTY DOLLARS rendered in stylised script along the lower border.
