The Series 1913 $50 Gold Certificate belongs to the large-size gold certificate series at a peculiar historical moment — the Federal Reserve Act had just been signed in December 1913, meaning notes like this one were already being superseded by a new monetary architecture even as they rolled off the BEP presses. Gold certificates of this era circulated primarily among banks and larger commercial transactions rather than passing through ordinary hands.
John Burke served as Treasurer under Woodrow Wilson; James C. Napier, his Register of the Treasury, was one of the few Black Americans to hold a senior federal financial appointment in that period. Their paired signatures appear on a note that was already near the end of its type's useful life.
