Singapore's four-nines fine gold bullion series was introduced in 1990 to compete directly with established sovereign bullion programs — the Maple Leaf, the Krugerrand, the Nugget. The .9999 fineness specification was a deliberate commercial decision, matching Canada's benchmark rather than the .9167 of the Krugerrand, positioning Singapore as a premium product in the Asian investment market at a time when the city-state was aggressively expanding its role as a regional financial hub.
