| Additional information |
The Marshall Islands began issuing commemorative coinage in 1986 following the Compact of Free Association with the United States, which granted the republic self-governance while retaining U.S. defense obligations. The mint authority contracted for these pieces was the U.S. Mint's private competitors, and production quality varies noticeably across the series. This 1994 issue marks the 25th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing — July 1969 — a date the Marshall Islands had particular reason to note, given that Kwajalein Atoll served as a NASA recovery zone for earlier Mercury and Gemini splashdowns.
