The 1996 series $50 note was the first major redesign of U.S. currency since the 1920s, driven not by aesthetic ambition but by the Treasury's response to a surge in high-quality counterfeiting — particularly from Colombia and Iran, where state-level or near-state-level printing operations had produced convincing fakes of the older small-feature design. The enlarged off-center portrait, color-shifting ink in the numeral, and embedded security thread printed with "USA FIFTY" were all direct countermeasures, not cosmetic updates.
The security thread glows yellow under UV — a detail specific to the $50 denomination, distinguishing it from other values in the same series.
