| Additional information |
The Marshall Islands issued a remarkable volume of commemorative silver dollars throughout the 1990s, targeting the collector market almost exclusively — virtually none entered circulation. This F-117 Nighthawk issue appeared roughly four years after the aircraft's combat debut in Operation Desert Storm, where it flew the opening strikes of the air campaign against Baghdad on January 17, 1991, completing all missions without a single confirmed loss.
The Nighthawk was officially retired in 2008, partly because the F-22 rendered it redundant and partly because stealth coating maintenance had proven enormously expensive.
