Palau has issued commemorative gold in volume since the 1990s, often with thematic connections that are tenuous at best. This piece marks Emperor Akihito's April 2015 visit to Palau — a trip carrying genuine historical weight. Akihito traveled to Peleliu to honor the roughly 10,000 Japanese soldiers who died there during the 1944 battle, one of the Pacific War's bloodiest island engagements. It was the first time a reigning Japanese emperor had visited the islands.
The visit was widely covered in Japan as part of Akihito's long-running personal effort to acknowledge wartime losses across the Pacific before his eventual abdication in 2019.
