Issued the same year Portugal marked the 500th anniversary of Bartolomeu Dias rounding the Cape of Good Hope, this Cook Islands release was part of a broader wave of Iberian explorer commemoratives flooding the market in the late 1980s. Da Gama's actual Cape passage came a decade after Dias, in 1497–98, opening the direct sea route to India that broke Venice's stranglehold on the spice trade.
Cook Islands was a prolific licensing vehicle for foreign mints during this period, with many issues produced by the B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Germany.
