Drake's 1577–1580 circumnavigation was sponsored partly by a syndicate of investors that included Queen Elizabeth I herself, who stood to profit from the privateering haul — and did, receiving a return that reportedly exceeded the Crown's entire annual foreign debt. Cook Islands was among several Pacific nations that issued commemorative silver in the late 1980s capitalizing on the 1988 Australian Bicentennial's broader Pacific heritage marketing wave, which drew collector interest across the region.
