Part of a broader BVI series commemorating pre-Columbian Arawak and Carib material culture, this issue was produced by the Franklin Mint under license during the period when that company aggressively marketed collector gold to Caribbean territories. The .500 fineness — unusual for a gold commemorative — kept production costs low while allowing a nominal gold content claim on marketing materials.
