Robert Peary's disputed 1909 claim to the North Pole became one of the most contentious debates in exploration history — his rival Frederick Cook (no relation to the issuer) filed a competing claim just days earlier, and the U.S. Congress never formally resolved the conflict. Peary's navigation records, examined decades later, suggested he may have missed the Pole by as much as 60 miles.
Cook Islands issued numerous silver commemoratives throughout the late 1980s targeting the collector market rather than circulation, KM#109 sitting squarely within that output.
