Additional information

Niue has long licensed its sovereign coinage authority to private minting operations — primarily the New Zealand Mint — generating revenue through collector issues rather than circulating currency. This 2002 Pikachu gold piece was produced under a licensing agreement with Nintendo at the height of the original Pokémon trading card and media boom, targeting the speculative collector market that briefly treated such issues as investments. Most were purchased directly from the mint and never handled.
