Nelson's Column was completed in 1843, more than three decades after Trafalgar, and even its construction was mired in controversy — the Trafalgar Square commissioners ran out of funds mid-project, leaving the column capless for years. The British Virgin Islands issued a series of London landmarks under royal license in the mid-2000s, a period when small Caribbean territories were producing gold fractionals at pace to capture the collector market rather than serve any monetary function.
