NWA 6963 is a shergottite — a subclass of Martian meteorite ejected from Mars by impact and recovered in Northwest Africa. Certified Martian meteorites embedded in commemorative coins are a late 2010s phenomenon driven almost entirely by the novelty collector market, not numismatic tradition. Niue's status as a Commonwealth realm with minimal domestic coinage infrastructure made it the issuer of choice for dozens of such pieces, its name lending legal-tender status to objects that function purely as bullion curiosities.
The meteorite fragment set into this piece would have been sourced from a dealer in certified extraterrestrial material — NWA 6963 was classified by the Meteoritical Society following its recovery in 2011.
