The "Incused" designation refers to a deliberate revival of the recessed relief technique used on Canada's original 1908–1919 gold sovereigns, where the design is pressed into the field rather than raised above it. The Royal Canadian Mint reintroduced this approach as a direct homage to that early coinage, producing an effect visually distinct from virtually every other modern bullion issue. Most contemporary gold coins use raised relief as a matter of convention; this series inverts that entirely.
The GML fractional set designation places this coin within a multi-piece collector release rather than standard bullion production, limiting its distribution channel and keeping mintages well below the Mint's regular Gold Maple Leaf output.
