The Hologram Maple Leaf series debuted in 1999 as the Royal Canadian Mint's response to increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting of bullion coinage. Platinum issues in the series were produced in comparatively small quantities relative to their gold and silver counterparts, reflecting the metal's narrower investor base and the additional production complexity of applying the laser-etched holographic element to the reverse field.
