Niue has operated as a licensing vehicle for third-party coin programs since the 1990s, with the New Zealand Mint producing commemorative issues on the island's behalf under a standing agreement. This Chopin piece belongs to a multi-year series capitalizing on the composer's enduring commercial appeal in the collector market — particularly strong in Poland, where national identification with Chopin runs deep enough that the Narodowy Bank Polski has issued its own competing Chopin bullion programs.
Chopin died in Paris in 1849, and disputes over his remains were immediate: his body was buried at Père Lachaise, but his sister smuggled his heart back to Warsaw, where it remains interred at the Holy Cross Church.
