| Obverse lettering | ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA 50 DOLLARS SB (Translation: Elizabeth II Queen by the grace of God) |
| Reverse description | The reverse presents a dramatic numismatic composition commemorating the ill-fated Franklin Expedition of 1845–1848, engraved by Susan Taylor. HMS Terror is depicted firmly beset in pack ice, its hull and rigging rendered in high sculptural relief, with the coin's corrugated, irregularly serrated edge masterfully designed to evoke the jagged ice floes enclosing the vessel. In the foreground, surviving crew members and officers are shown abandoning ship, while a second group is depicted in the distance laboriously hauling a lifeboat across the frozen landscape toward King William Island. The legend CANADA 2020 appears within the design field, accompanied by the engraver's initials mb. |
