Aanvullende informatie

Cook Islands issued a wave of commemorative gold in the early 1990s under licensing arrangements that had little to do with the islands themselves — the FIFA World Cup 1994 connection was purchased commercial rights, not any organic athletic significance to a territory of roughly 20,000 people. The .583 fineness is notable: sometimes called 14-karat gold, it was deliberately chosen over .999 or .900 to keep production costs low while maintaining a "gold coin" designation for collector appeal.

Issued two years before the tournament actually took place in the United States — the first World Cup held on American soil.
