50 Dollars - Elizabeth II Emperor Maximilian

Maximilian I of Mexico was a Habsburg archduke installed as emperor in 1864 through the combined machinations of Napoleon III and a faction of Mexican conservatives who believed a European monarch could stabilize the country. The French withdrew their troops under American pressure in 1867, leaving Maximilian exposed. He refused to abdicate, was captured by Juárez's republican forces at Querétaro, and was executed by firing squad on June 19, 1867 — his reign lasting just three years.

Cook Islands issued a substantial commemorative series in the early 1990s covering historical figures with little direct Pacific connection, KM#196 being one of several dozen such pieces produced for the collector market rather than circulation.
