Jakob le Maire is frequently overshadowed by Abel Tasman in the history of Dutch Pacific exploration, but his 1615–1616 voyage with Willem Schouten was the more audacious gamble — privately financed specifically to circumvent the VOC's monopoly on the Cape of Good Hope route. Their discovery of Cape Horn as an alternative passage directly undermined that monopoly. Le Maire died on the return voyage in 1616, reportedly from illness, though relations with VOC officials who arrested the expedition at Batavia had turned hostile enough that contemporaries were less than charitable in their accounts.
