Additional information

Diego de Almagro led the first European expedition into Chile in 1535–36, crossing the Atacama Desert and Andes in conditions that killed a significant portion of his force. He found none of the gold he was promised and returned to Peru to a political situation that would end in his execution by Francisco Pizarro's men in 1538. Cook Islands issued a long series of explorer-themed crowns through the late 1980s and early 1990s, largely marketed to the collector market rather than circulated — Almagro appearing here is historically apt, if largely overlooked.
