Vitus Bering led two major expeditions under Peter the Great and later Anna of Russia to determine whether Asia and North America were connected by land. He died on the return voyage of the Second Kamchatka Expedition in December 1741, stranded on what is now Bering Island, where his grave was excavated by a Danish-Russian team in 1991 — the year before this coin was issued. The timing was deliberate.
