The Czech Lion bullion series, struck for Niue by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou, occupies an unusual position in the modern gold bullion market — a Czech national symbol issued under Pacific Island authority purely as a legal mechanism for international distribution. The arrangement is common among Czech Mint products but has drawn periodic scrutiny from collectors questioning the legitimacy of the issuing jurisdiction's nominal sovereignty over the design.
The 2022 issue marks the seventh year of the series, by which point secondary market premiums had compressed significantly as the design became familiar and mintage allocations expanded.
