Issued to front-run the wave of Columbus quincentenary commemoratives flooding the market ahead of 1992, Cook Islands was among the earliest Pacific issuers to stake a claim on the theme — a commercially calculated move that produced dozens of Columbus-related issues throughout the early 1990s. The series became so saturated that secondary market premiums collapsed almost immediately after the anniversary year passed.
