Samuel de Champlain famously lost an astrolabe near the Ottawa River in 1613 — or so the story goes. The instrument surfaced in 1867 near Green Lake, Ontario, and was eventually acquired by the New York Historical Society, where it remains despite persistent Canadian efforts to repatriate it. Whether the astrolabe genuinely belonged to Champlain has never been conclusively established, but the association proved durable enough to anchor this issue.
