Reverse description The reverse presents a highly detailed rendering of Samuel de Champlain's 1612 map of New France, meticulously engraved across the silver field and featuring topographical elements, coastal placenames in period script, sailing vessels, a compass sun motif at the bottom, and the royal arms of France at the top. Superimposed at centre is a three-dimensional, selectively applied bronze-plated molded element representing a mariner's astrolabe — the instrument famously associated with Champlain — with its open-work wheel, alidade, and suspension ring rendered in high relief. A band of degree markings and navigational graduations encircles the inner border of the coin, reinforcing the cartographic and astronomical theme. Below the astrolabe, a small inscription in period lettering appears in the field, and the overall composition conveys the spirit of early seventeenth-century French exploration of North America.
