The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority was established in 1997, taking over currency functions from the Currency Board that had operated since 1972. This C Series note was part of the first full issue under the new authority's name, though the design family itself had been in use since the 1990s B Series with relatively modest updating between runs.
De La Rue's involvement with Cayman currency goes back to the earliest local issues. The territory's dollar, pegged at 1.20 USD since 1974, has remained one of the highest-valued currency units in the Caribbean — a deliberate policy choice tied to the offshore financial sector rather than domestic economic conditions.
