This piece was issued by Fiji as part of a wave of foreign-struck commemoratives that flooded the market following Obama's January 2009 inauguration. Fiji, like several small sovereign states, licensed its name to private minting houses — principally in Europe — to produce legal-tender coins aimed squarely at collector demand rather than circulation. The arrangement is entirely nominal; no such coin ever reached a Fijian cash register.
The weight corresponds to a tenth-ounce equivalent, a format popularized by the bullion commemorative trade in the late 2000s.
