San Martín is an unusual subject for a Cook Islands commemorative — his significance lies entirely in South American history, as the general who led independence campaigns across Argentina, Chile, and Peru in the 1810s and 1820s. Cook Islands issued a substantial run of silver collector pieces throughout the early 1990s under licensing arrangements that had little connection to the subjects depicted, producing commemoratives covering historical figures from virtually every continent.
San Martín died in exile in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1850, largely forgotten by the Argentine government he had served.
