Cook Islands began issuing large-format silver commemoratives in the late 1980s under a licensing arrangement that had little to do with Pacific history and everything to do with the international collector market. The Lincoln issue was part of a broader "Famous People" series capitalizing on American iconographic appeal for U.S. buyers.
Lincoln's assassination on April 14, 1865 — he died the following morning — came just five days after Lee's surrender at Appomattox.
