Australia's sovereign coinage traces directly to the Melbourne branch of the Royal Mint, established in 1872 to process gold from the Victorian rushes rather than ship raw bullion to London. The Perth Mint — opened in 1899 as the last of the three Australian branches — inherited that tradition when the others closed, and continues striking sovereigns to this day under a licensing arrangement with the British Royal Mint that is unique among Commonwealth nations.
