The Lillypilly series from Perth Mint used pad printing — a process borrowed from industrial manufacturing — to apply color directly onto platinum, a technique demanding exceptional surface preparation given platinum's density and resistance to adhesion. The Small Leaf Lillypilly (Acmena smithii) is native to eastern Australia's rainforest margins, an unremarkable plant in the field but one that produces the fine color gradients that justified this technically demanding production method.
