The Emu series from the Perth Mint ran through the 1990s and into the mid-2000s, issued annually in a format that gave the bird unusually sustained numismatic attention compared to most wildlife programs of the period. The 2006 issue was among the later entries, produced as mintage figures for the series were tightening relative to earlier years.
Perth's .9999 fineness standard — four nines — was adopted to distinguish their bullion and proof output from the .999 fine coins then common from competing mints. The distinction was commercially deliberate.
