Additional information

The Discover Australia series, launched by the Perth Mint in the mid-2000s, was conceived partly as a response to the international bullion market's appetite for wildlife-themed gold issues following the sustained commercial success of the Kangaroo program. The goanna — a monitor lizard genus with species reaching two metres in length — has deep significance in Aboriginal cosmology across multiple language groups, appearing in Dreamtime narratives as both ancestor figure and trickster.

KM#1730 carries a mintage ceiling of 1,000 pieces.
