Issued to mark the 40th anniversary of Prince William's birth, this is one of Niue's larger gold commemorative releases — a category the island nation has leaned into heavily since licensing arrangements with the Perth Mint and others gave it a viable revenue stream from collector coinage. Niue holds no monetary union with New Zealand despite using the New Zealand dollar domestically, which makes its coin-issuing authority an administrative curiosity rather than a reflection of any independent monetary system.
