The Australian Nugget series launched in 1986 as Perth Mint's direct challenge to the South African Krugerrand, the Canadian Maple Leaf, and the American Gold Eagle — all competing for the same institutional and retail bullion buyer. The series took its theme from Australia's tradition of spectacular alluvial gold finds, a tradition with genuine weight: the Welcome Stranger nugget, unearthed in Victoria in 1869, remains the largest alluvial gold nugget ever recorded at roughly 71 kg.
Each annual issue in this series depicted a different nugget, a design rotation that distinguished it from competitors with static imagery.
