The Bermuda Monetary Authority replaced the Bermuda Government as issuing authority in 1969, and De La Rue had printed Bermudian currency continuously through both regimes. By 1989, the $50 note sat at the top of the circulating series — no $100 denomination existed in this series — making it the highest-value note in everyday use on the island.
The see-through register, a feature De La Rue was deploying across several Commonwealth territories in this period, relies on precisely aligned printing on both faces to form a complete image when held to light. On Bermudian notes of this era, the cotton substrate occasionally causes faint ink bleed around fine-line borders, which collectors sometimes misattribute to a printing fault.
