The hawksbill is listed as critically endangered under the IUCN Red List, with global nesting populations estimated at fewer than 25,000 females — a collapse driven largely by centuries of tortoiseshell trade, which targeted this species almost exclusively. Niue has no meaningful hawksbill habitat of its own; the New Zealand Mint issues these coins on the island's behalf under a longstanding licensing arrangement that has made Niue one of the most prolific coin-issuing jurisdictions per capita on earth.
