Chibi Maruko-chan, the semi-autobiographical manga created by Momoko Sakura in 1986, has run as an anime series on Fuji Television since 1990 — making it one of the longest continuously airing animated programs in Japanese broadcasting history. The Cook Islands has served as the issuing authority for a large share of the numismatic licensing market in the Asia-Pacific region precisely because its sovereign status allows foreign mints and distributors to place collectible gold issues outside Japanese regulatory constraints.
