The Shōwa era — the reign name assigned to Hirohito's rule — spans 1926 to 1989, making its centenary fall in 2026. That the commemorating issuer is Cook Islands rather than Japan is a function of the commemorative bullion market: Japan's own mint does not produce collector gold of this kind for export, leaving the field to licensed foreign issuers. Cook Islands has held a longstanding arrangement allowing it to produce legal tender coins of this type.
